Rise in theft linked to rise in food prices?

It certainly seems that way! Today, Time reported that pig thefts are on the rise. In the last few months, over 1000 hogs have been stolen in the Midwest.

Currently, the price for a pig is around $200, a record. This attracts criminal activity, as pigs can be stolen and later sold. In addition,  pigs are often indistinguishable from one another, so knowing which pigs are legitimate or stolen is virtually impossible.
