A call to justice

As our government tries to negotiate the federal budget, we fear that many needed programs will be adversely affected. Last weekend, the House of Representatives passed their version of the FY11 Continuing Resolution bill. Unfortunately, the bill significantly reduces funding for programs that serve low income citizens such as:

  • The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) Infrastructure Grants
  • Hunger Free Community Grant programs
  • Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
  • Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

As we try to fast from spending, let us  heed the call of Isaiah 58, “Is this the manner of fasting I wish, of keeping a day of penance: That a man bow his head like a reed, and lie in sackcloth and ashes? Do you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly… sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless”

The Senate will be working on the budget during the week of February 28th.
